WHAT AM I?

 

In this whole world everyone searches for happiness outside, but nobody understands their true self inside. Everybody says, “I.” “I want this, I am like that...” but nobody understands this “I”. Before you were born, where did you come from? When you die where do you go? If you sincerely ask, “What am I?” sooner or later you will run into a wall where all thinking is cut off. We call this “Don’t know.” Zen is keeping this don’t-know mind always and everywhere.

 

ABOUT THE CENTER

Dharma Zen Center (DZC) is located at 1025 S. Cloverdale Avenue, two blocks west of La Brea Avenue, just south of Olympic Boulevard. The center was founded by Zen Master Seung Sahn in 1974 as a place where monks and lay people from all countries can practice Zen together and find their true selves. We have formal meditation practice — bowing, chanting, and sitting Zen — in the mornings and evenings for both our resident Zen students and outside members.

(COMMUNITY DAY)

Morning Practice (10:00am-noon) Chanting and sitting with kong-an interviews on the first Sunday of each month. Other non-retreat Sunday Practice consists of chanting, sitting, and a Circle talk or Dharma talk. Dharma talks are followed by a question and answer session with a Teacher. Sundays are a great day for newcomers to check out DZC.

Practice is open to the public and is donation-based. First-time meditators are encouraged to call before to schedule an intro session. No one is ever turned away for lack of funds. 

 
 

First time at DZC? No Problem 

We offer an introduction to meditation by appointment. Please arrange a time in advance by calling (323) 934-0330. There is a suggested donation of $10. However, no one is ever turned away for an inability to donate.

ABOUT RETREATS

Retreats are held at the Dharma Zen Center in Los Angeles. They're a time to step away from the frenetic pace of life and sit quietly, looking into ourselves and the nature of who we are. Retreats at DZC are led by Zen Masters or Guiding Teachers. Retreats are held in silence, beginning with dharma talks on Friday night, and concluding Sundays afternoons. Meals are held in traditional Zen style (4 bowls). If you're not sure what that means, don't worry! We'll show you everything you need to know. It's okay to make mistakes!
